How Rigid Hydraulic Pipes Are Manufactured Using Cutting Ring Systems (DIN 2353)

How Rigid Hydraulic Pipes Are Manufactured Using Cutting Ring Systems (DIN 2353)

How Are Rigid Hydraulic Pipes Made Without Welding?

In hydraulic systems, creating a reliable and leak-free connection is critical—especially under high pressure. One of the most widely used methods is the cutting ring system according to DIN 2353, which allows rigid hydraulic pipes to be assembled without welding or soldering.

This technology is standard in industrial hydraulics because it combines strength, repeatability and serviceability.

What Is a Cutting Ring System (DIN 2353)?

A cutting ring connection is a mechanical sealing method where a specially designed ring “cuts” into the surface of the pipe during assembly. This creates a secure, high-pressure connection between the pipe and the fitting.

The system consists of three main components:

  • fitting body with a 24° internal cone,
  • nut,
  • cutting ring.

During tightening, the cutting ring bites into the pipe surface, forming both a mechanical grip and a sealing interface.

Production Process of Rigid Hydraulic Pipes

1. Pipe preparation

The process starts with seamless precision tubes (carbon steel or stainless steel). The pipe must be:

  • cut square (90°),
  • carefully deburred,
  • free from contamination.

Poor preparation at this stage directly affects sealing performance and connection reliability.

2. Component selection

Correct matching of:

  • pipe size,
  • cutting ring,
  • fitting (L or S series),
is essential for proper pressure resistance and system compatibility.

3. Cutting ring assembly

There are two main methods:

Manual assembly
The nut is tightened onto the fitting, forcing the cutting ring to penetrate the pipe surface. This creates the seal and mechanical hold.

Machine pre-assembly
Used in serial production. Dedicated machines ensure:

  • consistent ring penetration,
  • repeatability,
  • elimination of human error.

In practice, this is the preferred method for production environments.

4. Pipe forming (optional)

Rigid pipes can be bent according to a drawing or template, allowing precise fit within machines or installations. This reduces the need for additional connectors and improves system layout.

Advantages of Cutting Ring Technology

1. High pressure resistance

Cutting ring systems are designed for high-pressure hydraulic applications, with performance depending on the series:

  • L (light)
  • S (heavy)

They also perform well under vibration and dynamic loads.

2. Serviceability

The connection is removable, which allows:

  • repeated assembly and disassembly,
  • easier maintenance,
  • faster repairs.

3. No welding required

Eliminating welding:

  • removes the risk of corrosion in heat-affected zones,
  • prevents contamination inside the system,
  • simplifies production.

Where This Technology Is Used

Cutting ring systems are standard in:

  • industrial hydraulics,
  • mobile machinery,
  • agricultural equipment,
  • construction machines,
  • high-pressure installations.

Summary

DIN 2353 cutting ring systems are a proven method for manufacturing rigid hydraulic pipes without welding. They provide high strength, reliable sealing and repeatable assembly, making them a practical standard in modern hydraulic systems.

If the goal is durable, serviceable and high-pressure-resistant connections, cutting ring technology is one of the most effective solutions available.
